Distracted driving claims thousands of lives every year. It poses great risks to people and property for companies operating trucking and similar fleet operations.

Since April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, it’s important to consider how to cut these risks. We’re working up a unique offering with another industry leading distracted driving risk management partner to help make the road safer by reducing mobile phone distractions for truckers and other employees operating fleet vehicles.

The Distracted Driving Risk

Talking and texting on the phone, even with hands-free features, pulls our attention away from safely operating a motor vehicle.

The National Health and Safety Administration gives this example of the risk:

“Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.”

The National Safety Council has named April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, with the goal of ending the risks of distracted driving.

Our Responsible Driving Solution

Our new combined and patented approach to solving the distracted driving problem for companies employing truck drivers and other vehicle operators will launch shortly!

Here’s a preview: the solution works seamlessly with your workforce management systems and policy enforcement processes related to IT and mobile devices. It enables fleet operators or other transportation operations to set and automatically enforce network-based rules that can prevent their drivers from driving while distracted from calls or texts.

You can set policies to prohibit your drivers from all mobile usage except an emergency call when the vehicle is moving over a certain speed. Or you can allow calls to the dispatcher only outside of rush hour, or only during daylight hours.

The solution cannot be circumvented by drivers like traditional app-based approaches to restricting mobile usage, and it utilizes Mobile-X from Tango Networks to enforce policies in the communications network itself. That means enforcement is ironclad and your users will not be able to do end-runs around the policy.

At the same time, the solution’s “Accountable Bypass with Recorded Consent” feature enables a driver to report a road emergency while driving at highway speeds. That permits an override of the system using a very specific and controlled process.

Bottom line: our upcoming solution protects lives and property and allows a company to establish safe, completely enforceable mobile phone policies for its drivers.

If you operate a trucking, logistics, shipping or other business that employs drivers, this is for you! Stay tuned to Tango Networks in the News for the latest!
